WHO IS JAYLA THOMAS?

Jayla Thomas is a business leader, energy advocate, and community focused problem solver who believes leadership means running toward hard challenges, not away from them.

Born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada, and educated in New York, Jayla has seen firsthand what happens when growth is pursued without guardrails. From a young age, she knew she wanted to make Nashville her home, a city defined by culture, community, and character. That dream became reality after she got married and convinced her husband to take the leap, putting down roots in a place they now proudly call home.

Because of where she comes from, certain phrases hit Jayla differently. When people casually refer to Nashville as “Nashvegas” or “Nashyork,” it makes her pause. She has seen what those cities struggled through, the erosion of community, the loss of affordability, and the quiet displacement of working families. Those names are not jokes to her. They are warnings.

In New York, entire neighborhoods in Queens and Brooklyn became unaffordable almost overnight. Families were priced out of the very communities they grew up in, forced to move to other states and commute hours just to survive. That loss of time with family, stability, and quality of life is something Jayla refuses to see repeated in Nashville. She believes Tennessee, and Nashville in particular, has a culture worth preserving. Growth and tourism should never come at the expense of the people who make this city what it is. Jayla welcomes people from all walks of life and from many places, but she believes those who come should assimilate into the beauty and values of Nashville, not recreate the same problems they left behind.

Jayla holds a degree in Biological Sciences, a background that shaped the way she approaches leadership. Math and science taught her to think in systems, identify root causes, and solve problems before they become crises. That mindset has guided her career across business consulting, M&A, and energy infrastructure, where decisions are complex and consequences are real.

Through her work in energy infrastructure, Jayla began to see a troubling reality. Tennessee’s energy systems are already overloaded, yet policies continue to push increased density without the necessary investment in power, water, and grid reliability. That disconnect caused her to pause her own business ambitions and step into public service, because communities cannot thrive when infrastructure is treated as an afterthought.

As a commissioner on Nashville’s Affordable Housing Trust Fund, Jayla sees the human cost of these failures every day. Families are being pushed out of the very neighborhoods their parents helped knit together. To her, housing is not an abstract policy debate. It is about protecting generational wealth transfer and ensuring that working families are not priced out of their future.

Jayla does not run from hard truths. She runs toward them. Her perspective as an outsider is not a weakness, it is her strength. She has seen what failure looks like in other places, and she is committed to fighting so Nashville does not repeat those mistakes. Her leadership is rooted in foresight, accountability, and a deep belief that progress should strengthen communities, not erase them.

At her core, Jayla Thomas is a builder of businesses, systems, and communities, and a leader determined to protect Nashville’s future by learning from the past.
